Where Has V I Warshawski Been?

Hardball will be in stores on September 22, but I have an extra Advance Reader Copy –what some people call bound galleys.  As you may remember, it’s been a few years since V I was last tearing up Chicago, or being torn up by Chicago.  What was the Girl Detective doing while I was writing Bleeding Kansas and Writing in an Age of Silence?  Post your idea here and the one that is the best–funniest, scariest, or most clever–will win its author my last advance reader copy.  Our judges are completely subjective–remember, this is Chicago!

Hi Sara! Looking forward to your upcoming novel. Congratulations on being named Chicago Magazine’s best mystery author! I just read the August issue this week and was very happy to see your name. Hope to see you at a Sisters4Science session this year. In the meantime, enjoy your summer!

What a terrific idea, Sara! Is there a deadline for submitting our ideas? (I need to ponder a little….)

Comment by The Bag Lady

Deadline: yes, please submit by August 31. I’m looking forward to what you come up with!

Hi Sara. It seems obvious to me that V.I. was travelling through Europe engrossed in a case so complex she lost touch with you for some years. I know this because I met her at Rosslyn Chapel and Kilwinning Abbey. She muttered something about Knights Templar and what sounded like ‘Illuminati’ and was overheard to mention the Holy Grail and US Cellular Field. But I can’t be sure…

I like this idea – I never asked myself what VI could do while you are writing a new book.

But when reading the last book I wondered more than one time how old VI might be now. And now I wonder how old she will be in the coming book.
Some “heroes” never get elder, but I don’t think that VI is some of these…

I thought of a storyline in the middle of the night, last night. I really did! I’m not sure how funny/clever/scary it is but it would be interesting, for sure. So how do we submit them – here in the comments section or do we email them?

I think VI was running security for Rod Blagojavitch (sp?) Her services are no longer required there so she is back in action doing PI stuff.

She came to Britain after having an epiphany while talking to an ex lover and realising how injurious, insulting, anachronistic and indefensible a hereditary monarch as head of state is to every person there and in fact to every human on the planet. She became involved with groups campaigning for an elected head of state during which she dressed as Thomas Paine in a protest re-enactment of the French and American revolutions, where replica flintlocks turned out to have been primed by a monarchist agent provocateur, causing the ‘Chick Lit’ author Louise Bagshawe, a monarchist and prospective Tory candidate for Parliament, to lose a finger on her writing hand and try to sue the protest groups. V.I. still wakes up some mornings with the smell of gunpowder in her nostrils, something which always puts her in an exceedingly cheerful and optimistic frame of mind. Subsequent to the L Bag incident V.I was abducted by two of the unwholesome parasites who surround the throne, the hands who rock the cradle of inbred stupidity and blood disorders, when she was locked in the boot of a car and driven to the north of Scotland to an unknown fate. However, she managed to loosen her bindings and as the car was driven through the gates of Balmoral she was able to attract the attention of protestors who were there demonstrating about the Queen refusing to open Buckingham Palace to the public enough to cover its repairs. Two palace officials were charged with abduction and V.I. was put on a plane back to America. The story continues…

Darn it. If she’s spent so much time in the UK, how on earth didn’t I run into her?!

Will come back to this one, but I do have a feeling that she might have felt her old political activist muscles twitching and campaigned for Obama…

Congratulations Sara!

VI’s been much missed. Here’s another one rooting for her to have sojourned in Britain and or Europe. VI’s mother had roots in Europe and there could be all sorts of family branch far flung members which could lead her into all kinds of tangled skiens.

And Lotty. One of the most moving and strong women characters in any book, in any genre, is Lotty Herschel. Although as a new young refugee, Lotty had an unhappy time in wartime England, VI might travel to Britain (where I heard her literary agent read at Borders, Oxford St, a few years ago), again to encounter and pick up on loose ends, peoples, or a mystery from the past which propels her into present day Britain/Europe?

Wherever the call comes from, so glad our gal is up an at ’em again.

V I Warshawski where has she been?
For far too long our heroine hasn’t been seen
Did she visit Poland to trace her famiy tree?
Or perhaps Italy in the footsteps of mummy?

Did a rugged stranger sweep her off her feet?
And a passionate affair meant she had to be discreet
Or did she take the dogs on a jog around the loop
And she ended up in prison ‘cos she didn’t poop ‘da’ scoop?

The answers to these questions we will shortly know
When Hardball is available at your favourite book-store
So order yourself a copy, of this you can be sure
It’s guaranteed to be the the book of the year.

Burnt out and in need of a change of scene, VI travels to Italy to research her mother’s family story. VI rents a little apartment. She is befriended by neighbor families and learns their stories while learning about her mother’s life before the war.

After being extradited back to the US of A, VI is clandestinely pursued by emissaries of Prince Philip and emissaries of Prince Charles, who are actually working in opposition to each other. Due to her gifts of empathy, analysis and deduction she begins to understand the complex psychological problems which are in play in the ridiculous, indefensible status quo of hereditary monarchy having anything to do with the position of head of state and she is able to bring about the beginning of a healing process for these victims of a monarchic system, and simultaneously the long-overdue dismantling of same.

V.I. has been on the most dangerous case in her life since we last saw her, one which required her to go undercover for a long period. Corruption in the music business has been a fact of life for a long time, but when Jason Scheff, Tris Imboden, Keith Howard and Lou Pardini contacted VI and asked her to join their group on their latest tour it presented the perfect cover for Vic. As the newest member of (sorry about this) CHICAGO she has been touring the country while investigating corruption and violent crime in the music business.

Seeking respite from her unrelenting career and Chicago, V I woke one morning, impulsively packed a carry-on bag and soft leather shoulder purse and taxied to O’Hare for the first available flight to LA. She crossed the Pacific and spent a week in Hong Kong becoming immersed in the garment district and seduced by irresistable silks and tales of the Silk Road. After a Polish trader came to her in a dream she embarked further into the interior of Asia, continued overland through the foothills of the Sayan Mountains to Kyzyl, the capital of Tuva. Here she spent several months on the plains with the nomads and throat singers: living in a yurt and becoming a proficient horsewoman. The last report of V I indicated she was riding with a small group of travelers from the village intent on recreating an ancient trek, heading with a supply of fine silk to the shores of the Baltic Sea in search of spectacular amber and the Pole she felt was already there waiting for her.

[…] Where was V I Warshawski while I was working on other projects?  We posed the question, and people with way more imagination than I have came up with ideas that were both clever and appropriately cynical.  Although this is Chicago, the fix was not in.  No money or goods or even services changed hands in determining a winner.  Instead, the judging was completely arbitrary.
