The murder of Dr Tiller

Dr. George Tiller was murdered in church this morning by an anti-abortion fanatic.  Dr. Tiller’s clinic in Wichita, Kansas, was one of three in the country where women could receive late-term abortions.  He and his clinic have been targets of violence for years.  This morning, he was murdered in front of his wife, who was singing in the church choir.

I cannot begin to say how sickened I am by this wanton, heinous act.  As I find out any information about memorial funds or actions, I’ll post them.

That is awful news, Sara. It’s hard to believe people will do a thing like that.

That is terrible. I have never understood why the life of an unborn child is so much more important to the anti-abortionists than the life of anyone else.

You are so right, Bag Lady! Pro-life they call themselves! And it’s usually women who are poor and without resources to look after a child/any more children who are using those clinics. The medics who work there are very brave, especially in the US where all it takes is a gun shot.

Here’s some other, sobering information: not counting pickets and clinic blockades, there have been 15,125 acts of violence against providers and clinics since 1977, when the National Abortion Federation first began gathering statistics. These include 8 murders, 17 attempted murders, 179 episodes of battery, and 100 episodes of attack with butyric acid. The other statistics refer to kidnapping, stalking, bomb and arson, and anthrax.

Your piece in the Guardian was very interesting and thought provoking. Thank you, Sara.

Could you put a link to it here? I tried to find it online, but couldn’t.

Thank you! Maybe it would make a good blog post?

Der Ms Paretsky
It is indeed a despicable crime.
May the good doctor rest in peace.

Hope you will write a book about this since pro-life is “hot” in the US now. Also you can weave the issues of gay marriages in the same novel. It will sure be a best-seller.I will be first in line to buy it. Thank you.

Unfortunatley, the inhumanity of man never ceases to amaze me.

Something else I always wondered-for those that believe that life begins at inception—with medical science indicating that a woman who smokes, uses drugs or drinks during pregnancy is harming the unborn fetus–why isn’t she charged with child endangerment? Also, if there is a miscarriage (regardless of the reason)–where is the charge for involuntary manslaughter?

I know this idea seems absurb, but so are their actions
