[...] Where was V I Warshawski while I was working on other projects? We posed the question, and people with way more imagination than I have came up with ideas that were both clever and appropriately cynical. Although this is Chicago, the fix was not in. No money or goods or even services changed hands in determining a winner. Instead, the judging was completely arbitrary.
Seeking respite from her unrelenting career and Chicago, V I woke one morning, impulsively packed a carry-on bag and soft leather shoulder purse and taxied to O'Hare for the first available flight to LA. She crossed the Pacific and spent a week in Hong Kong becoming immersed in the garment district and seduced by irresistable silks and tales of the Silk Road. After a Polish trader came to her in a dream she embarked further into the interior of Asia, continued overland through the foothills of the Sayan Mountains to Kyzyl, the capital of Tuva. Here she spent several months on the plains with the nomads and throat singers: living in a yurt and becoming a proficient horsewoman. The last report of V I indicated she was riding with a small group of travelers from the village intent on recreating an ancient trek, heading with a supply of fine silk to the shores of the Baltic Sea in search of spectacular amber and the Pole she felt was already there waiting for her.

V.I. has been on the most dangerous case in her life since we last saw her, one which required her to go undercover for a long period. Corruption in the music business has been a fact of life for a long time, but when Jason Scheff, Tris Imboden, Keith Howard and Lou Pardini contacted VI and asked her to join their group on their latest tour it presented the perfect cover for Vic. As the newest member of (sorry about this) CHICAGO she has been touring the country while investigating corruption and violent crime in the music business.

After being extradited back to the US of A, VI is clandestinely pursued by emissaries of Prince Philip and emissaries of Prince Charles, who are actually working in opposition to each other. Due to her gifts of empathy, analysis and deduction she begins to understand the complex psychological problems which are in play in the ridiculous, indefensible status quo of hereditary monarchy having anything to do with the position of head of state and she is able to bring about the beginning of a healing process for these victims of a monarchic system, and simultaneously the long-overdue dismantling of same.

Burnt out and in need of a change of scene, VI travels to Italy to research her mother's family story. VI rents a little apartment. She is befriended by neighbor families and learns their stories while learning about her mother's life before the war.

V I Warshawski where has she been?
For far too long our heroine hasn't been seen
Did she visit Poland to trace her famiy tree?
Or perhaps Italy in the footsteps of mummy?

Did a rugged stranger sweep her off her feet?
And a passionate affair meant she had to be discreet
Or did she take the dogs on a jog around the loop
And she ended up in prison 'cos she didn't poop 'da' scoop?

The answers to these questions we will shortly know
When Hardball is available at your favourite book-store
So order yourself a copy, of this you can be sure
It's guaranteed to be the the book of the year.

Congratulations Sara!

VI's been much missed. Here's another one rooting for her to have sojourned in Britain and or Europe. VI's mother had roots in Europe and there could be all sorts of family branch far flung members which could lead her into all kinds of tangled skiens.

And Lotty. One of the most moving and strong women characters in any book, in any genre, is Lotty Herschel. Although as a new young refugee, Lotty had an unhappy time in wartime England, VI might travel to Britain (where I heard her literary agent read at Borders, Oxford St, a few years ago), again to encounter and pick up on loose ends, peoples, or a mystery from the past which propels her into present day Britain/Europe?

Wherever the call comes from, so glad our gal is up an at 'em again.
